About Haven House

How Haven House started

With a pot of soup on Friday nights in 1987. Our story, how we work and who runs things.

Our story

A pot of soup and an open door

In 1987, the kitchen team at First Church on Mercy Street started serving soup on cold Friday nights. One night in January, a few of the guests asked if they could sleep in the hall. The church said yes, and moved the pews.

Today there are 80 shelter beds, three meals a day and a twelve-month recovery program, run with the help of about 900 volunteers a year.
